Geocache Description:

This is a Letterbox type cache at the lovely church of Gerrans. The cache is not at the posted co-ordinates. To find the cache, simply follow the clues below to gain the numbers for the final GZ equation. The cache contains a stamp but NO inkpad and is to be kept in the cache and not used as a  trade item.

Gerrans parish church (dedicated to St Gerent or Gerendus) was built in the 13th century and enlarged in the 15th century when the south and aisle and the tower topped with a spire were added. However, in 1849 everything except the tower was rebuilt (by William White of Truro) though this was done as closely as possible to the original church. The two-stage tower is buttressed, battlemented, and topped by a spire.

From the hilltop village and church of Gerrans there is a stunning view of Gerrans Bay with Gull Rock and Nare Head in the distance. At the bottom of the hill lie the white-washed cottages and tiny harbour of Portscatho. The name Gerrans is believed to be derived from Gerent, an early Cornish king/saint who lived in the 8th century. There is a local legend he was buried with a boat made of gold at Carne Beacon, near Veryan. His name was written in the Latin form of Gerontius by early scribes, and the name still exists today in Wales as Geraint. He has been woven into the legends of King Arthur and Knights of the Round Table, but there is little historical evidence to support this.

Now to find the numbers -

Starting at the posted co-ordinates outside the porch entrance, head down the path to the first waypoint where you will find the grave of James Odgers which is enclosed by a wrought iron surround.

Last number of his year of death – ???A

The numbers of his wife Elizabeth’s age – BC

Now head over to the 2nd waypoint where you will find four shields. Find the shield with two axes on it and count the number of birds. This answer will give you 'D'.

The final clue can be found at the 3rd waypoint by the main tower and looking for a Plaque attached to the south side of the tower. From this plaque, note the month as 'E' and the year as FGFF.
