Ilkley Eastside Wander #13: High Stead
This is the 13th of a series of 20 caches which will take you through some of the lovely countryside immediately to the south-east of Ilkley.
See GC8PCW2 Ilkley East Wander #1: Intro and . . . Prick!? for information on the series and waypoints. See Gallery for an annotated map with cache locations and parking spots.
If doing Full Series in sequence: from #12, head along paths through the bracken and/or along the road to the gate @ N 53 54.698 W 1 47.315 and follow the lane heading northeast to the cache location
If doing Mini-Series 2: park at P3 and continue as above
The cache a small click 'n' lock box, is hidden just off the jeep track leading from the >400 year old Grade 2 listed High Stead Farm House up to Hangingstone Road / Moor Rd which runs past the Cow & Calf (rocks and hotel) skirting the moor between Ben Rhydding & Burley Woodhead - and the moors beyond.
The British Listed Buildings website listing for High Stead reads as follows [my additions]:
C16 [16th century]. 2 storeys. Stone squared and coursed. Stone slab roof. Earlier portion has mullioned windows with semi-circular heads [main horizontal part forming the top of a window frame] to the lights [individual window], arched fireplace and square chimney stack built diamond-wise on square base. Later part has mullioned windows, some with wooden frames inserted. The lintel over south doorway is initialled W.I.V. and dated 1596. W.V is also carved on an oak post supporting a floor beam. There is some carved oak panelling. Perhaps built by a Vavasour of Weston Hall [see here]
