Geocache Description:

Old Penkridge Road was frequented by highwaymen in the 1700's with the most notable being Tom 'Artful Dodger' Arnott.

He met his maker when Granny Brewer, who lived on her own on the edge of Cannock Chase, pointed to his den to hired policemen. After a trial at Stafford Courts, he was found guilty of his awful acts and sentenced to be hanged and his remains to be gibbeted near the scene of his crimes.

He was buried alongside a track that is now a continuation of Sandy Lane, in front of the Shoal Hill Tavern pub.

This location has beautiful views of the Staffordshire countryside around Cannock chase, and on the horizon you can see Shropshire's famous Wrekin mountain.

To reach the cache you should take the path to the right of Bill's seat, into the trees a little way. The cache is just off the path to the left, there are some swappables and a logbook. Please take care to replace the container in the same place you find it.

On a side note, we have noticed lots of spooky looking dens made out of branches on our wallks around the Chase recently, can anyone explain what they are?

Cache placed with the kind permission of the Shoal Hill Common Joint Committee.
