This geocache is to replace a cache (http://tiny.cc/mxyooz) that we had previously located nearby the former Veazie Ski Area. Unfortunately, that cache was disabled due to being on private property. After revisiting the area I've found a better place for the cache that is within a short distance of the old ski slope.
The cache is located within the Buck Hill Conservation Area which is a public walking area for the residents of Veazie. There is a wide-open field and some wooded trails to explore. I chose this area because it's adjacent to what was presumed to be the Veazie Ski Area. This cache serves as a homage to the lost local ski hills of the yesteryear. These small ski areas were often mom and pop run operations that benefited the local communities introducing them to the sport of skiing.
For easiest access to the cache, park in the parking lot at the beginning of the trailhead and walk towards the right side of the open field. The cache is just a little off from the field. It's not on the ground so it's winter-friendly.
To do this day, the former ski slope is visible from Route 2 directly behind where the Gagne concrete plant used to be.
An in-depth history of this ski area plus other lost local ski hills can be found at http://bangorlostskiareas.weebly.com/veazie-ski-area-veazie-me.html. Additional history can be found at http://www.nelsap.org/me/veazie.html which not only lists this area but other lost ski areas throughout Maine and New England.
