This is the city, Downers Grove, Illinois. 14.6 square miles of real estate. It takes a lot of departments and agencies to keep it going: Fire, Water, Education, Health, Library, Streets and Sanitation. There's also a department for law and order, that's where I come in. I carry a badge.
It's a warm, sunny Monday and Mike Swaney, a realtor, has been reported missing by his office. The preliminary investigation indicated a strong possibility of foul play.
The story you are about to read is true, the names have been changed to protect the innocent.
My partner, Bill Gannon and I arrived at Mike Swaney's office where his vehicle had been found early this morning. A search of the vehicle turned up a receipt for a withdrawal made from the bank Saturday. We proceeded to the bank where we learned the teller was Giselle Chavez. When we called the bank, we were told that she had just left for lunch but, that if we hurried, we might catch her.
Giselle Chavez remembered Mike Swaney, says he's a regular customer. She vaguely recalled that someone was with Mr. Swaney. It was a young man with a name badge from a nearby electronics store. She thought the name on the badge was Mitchell.
My partner and I proceeded to the electronics store and met up with Mitchell. Mitchell told us that he was indeed with Mike Swaney at the bank. Mitchell indicated that Mike owed him $50. After making the withdrawal, Mr. Swaney received a phone call and hurriedly left to meet a buyer who wanted to see a house. Mitchell didn't know who the buyer was but he thought he remembered hearing the address of the house. He gave us that address and we rushed over there.
Sadly, a search of the property where Mike Swaney met the caller was where he met his end. Not all crimes are solved in the big city. Like so many this one remains open in the hopes of eventually apprehending the culprit.
