In addition to Clear Shade Creek, an exceptional value trout stream, Gallitzin State Forest provides fishing opportunities in the form of ponds, scattered in the northern Babcock Division of the forest. Nine ponds are located around the perimeter of an area that was strip mined before the ground became part of Gallitzin State Forest. These were stocked in 2014-16 with fingerlings of Largemouth Bass, Blue Gill, and Brown Bullheads. Fishing is permitted from the shoreline only. Rafting, boating, and swimming are not permitted.
This cache involves a relatively level half mile round trip hike to picnic tables at remote Ponds 1 and 2. Planning your approach may require performing some confidential research. Besides bringing you to this remote but easily accessible peaceful spot, the intent of this cache is to have you explore beyond the guidance of your driving gps. The cache will require an approximately ¾ mile bushwack through relatively open grassy reclaimed strip mine, if you are just relying on your driving GPS to get you there from the “nearest” road typically shown on the GPSs. Alternatively, it is located approximately a 1,500 foot bushwack off the Lost Turkey Trail, ~2 miles from its crossing of Strip Mine Road.

The driving approach provides an expansive view to the southwest. It would be a good place to view the stars on a clear night or to watch storms roll in, unless you are doing the bushwack option above.
