Camped at N39 13.836 W119 54.743, elevation 4,483’, below this li’l mound, we figured ‘twould be fun to make a quick before-breakfast sprint to leave a cache atop the hill. Stupid plan.
‘bout a third of the way up the hill, it became obvious that we did NOT wanna come back down the way we went up (lots of large loose scree on steep slope & GREAT chance of us rolling back down the slope in severe discomfort). So, attempting to find a better way back down, we kept traversing & climbing, finally to the fairly level ledges beneath the vertical walls. Still failing to find a safe way down, we continued up the rock walls working our way around the west side of the hill, finally arriving at GZ, elev’n 6044’, placing the cache, then continuing ‘round to the NW side of the peak where we finally found a semi-safe route back down which is probably a bit safer way up, as well).
Getting back to camp was not as direct as we imagined. Turned out there were about eight canyons around the base of this li’l hill, each of which required descending, then re-ascending before reaching our starting point.
Great views from up there & fine pre-breakfast exercise, ‘tho we’d recommend bring some form of water (we chose oranges) hand shoes (aka “gloves”) & a camera (which we forgot to bring).
