The cemetery was damaged during hurricane Katrina when the Reggio Baptist Church was destroyed and again when Hurricane Isaac struck. It was established by the Reggio Baptist Church that once stood nearby. The church made the cemetery open to all area residents to bury their loved ones for free. The majority of those buried here are young which led to its nickname of Babyland. Today, with no associated church, it does fall into disrepair. As of 2020, local fishermen clear-cut the cemetery and take care of the graves.
