Tabakko Pass is located on the border of Takabe, Hitachi Omiya City and Osawa, Daigo Town, Kuji County.
The mysterious name Tabakko is the name of a small character in Takabe, Hitachi-Omiya City, but the etymology of the name is unclear, and there is an Ainu theory and a Jomon theory.
There are several Ainu theories, among which Taba means "mountain pass" and Ko is a nickname suffix, so the most likely one is "deflection → mountain deflection → tawakko → tabakko".
In addition to "Tabakko", there are other mysterious place names in the area such as "Kattaijari", "Hichomeki", "Hiramita" and "Botara".

タバッコ峠は常陸大宮市高部と久慈郡大子町大沢の境にある峠です。
タバッコという不思議な名前は常陸大宮市高部の小字の名称ですが、その語源については定かでは無く、アイヌ語説、縄文語説があります。
アイヌ語説にもいくつかの説があり、その中でも有力なのは、タバは地形を指す言葉で峠の事で、コは愛称を示す接尾語である事から、「たわみ → 山のたわんだところ → たわっこ → タバッコ 」であろうというのが有力な説となっています。
また、この辺りには、「タバッコ」のほかに「カッタイジャリ」「ヒチョメキ」「ヒラミタ」「ボタラ」などの不思議な地名があります。
