​Dreamcacher saw some yellow finches here and we decided to name the island after the yellow canary bird that reminds us of the finches.

​This is an island geocache. You can use the free parking and boat launch at Back Dam Park on Rock Road.

The river is usually calm, making it a nice alternative on windy days.

Be careful of low water and rocks in dry seasons. The cache hanging on a cedar tree on the west side of the island. You can stay in your boat.

Please note: this is a PADDLE-TO geocache (or small motor boat)and is on an island. It's a lovely place for a paddle, and in the summer, you will probably encounter other paddlers on the river. If you are new to kayaking or canoeing, I would suggest this river as a first place to geocache. There are no rapids. It's shallow in most places and the geocaches are mostly "stay-in-your-boat" and reach up into the overhanging branches of the cedar trees. It's a good place to bring that "muggle" spouse or friend, as the paddling is enjoyable and the views lovely. 

This peaceful 3 kilometre stretch of the Indian River from Warsaw town to the Warsaw Caves Conservation Area is one of my favourite "go-to" spots on a day when it's too windy to paddle on an open lake. Having said that, please, as with all my water geocaches, check the WIND speed before you launch. Wind is the one factor that makes all the difference in the world as to the level of enjoyment you have. Wind speeds of 5 km or VR will give you the best experience. I would advise you to stay off the water if the wind speeds are 15kms or higher. It will just be too much work and not the pleasant ride that it's meant to be. Also, early morning is the best time to paddle (start at 5 or 6 am). Generally, wind picks up around noon, and days are usually most windy around 5 pm. 

The nice thing about this stretch of the Indian River is that it's usually less windy here than in other places on the same day. Yes, there is a very gentle current which flows south, but you will not really notice it except that your trip back to your vehicle will seem slightly easier. The Indian River never fully freezes, so these geocaches will be impossible in winter. However, it is possible to get out on the river as early as March/April and as late as Nov./Dec. The first 1.5 kilometres from Warsaw town you can admire the houses along the river, where people live year round. But after that, the houses disappear and you will find yourself in a heavenly spot of quiet nature and interesting topography and geology. Once you arrive at the north end of this 3 km stretch, you will be in the Warsaw Caves Conservation Area.
