Geocache Description:

This is the fourth in a series of caches around the Perry Village Park.

Perry History Bite—In 1889 the formation of the Silver Lake Agricultural and Mechanical Association triggered an annual agricultural fair held in what is now the Perry Park.  The Association purchased 22 acres, fenced it in, constructed stables and animal pens, an exhibit building called the Floral Hall and laid out a half-mile race track.  Later came a covered grandstand facing the track on the west side—near where the tennis courts are located today.  The first fair, in autumn 1880, attracted 6000 people with more than 900 exhibitors.  Displays included everything for the farm and home.  There was a midway and hotly contested harness races.  The fair flourished until 1933 when the Depression hit and a Geneseo bank foreclosed on the mortgage and the Village of Perry bought the property.  Shortly thereafter the Village razed the various wooden structures, except for the Floral Hall in the middle of the Park.  A baseball diamond and tennis courts were built and scout cabin south of the tennis courts was constructed.  While a new grandstand was built for viewing baseball the only relics from the past are the Floral Hall and the ½ mile oval that circles the inside of the park.  In 1949 Rotary contributed funds to build a wading pool which was replaced in 2014 by a splash park.  In 1974 Rotary again donated money and labor to provide better ice skating, shuffleboard, volleyball and improved lighting.  Various upgrades continue to take place in the Perry Park.  (from Perry, NY  As It Was and Is)
