Perry History Bite--The town of Perry was first settled in 1807 with the first permanent settler, Samuel Gates, constructing a cabin at the Northwest end of Silver Lake.  Officially the Town of Perry was incorporated in 1814 and took its name from Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, the hero of the War of 1812.  The first schoolhouse was built in 1812.  The Village of Perry (incorporated in 1830) developed along Silver Creek, the Silver Lake Outlet, which runs from Silver Lake to the Genesee River in Letchworth State Park.  In 1831 the first dam on the outlet was constructed and helped bring water power to a variety of mills. In 1855 Perry was put “on the map” with the sighting of a Sea Serpent in Silver Lake.  Business boomed with a great deal of excitement.  The hoax was uncovered two years later when the creature was discovered in the ashes of a fire at the Walker House.  Railroads came to Perry in 1872 and transported tourists to Silver Lake and ice houses used the rails to transport ice to cities in the summer.  Mainstreet has changed over the years with the needs of the residents.  Early on many stores and businesses were destroyed by fire.  Electric wires and lights appeared in 1892 with telephones in 1894 and a water system in 1896.  The Leicester Street school opened in 1908 and the combined Village Hall and Fire Department in 1913.  Agriculture was and still is one of the biggest industries in the Perry area with many businesses developed to serve this need.  (from Around Perry, Images of America)
