Geocache Description:

This is the site of the former Skygarth Viaduct, which was built as part of the Clifton to Kirkby Stephen railway line.  The line opened in 1862 and was closed to passengers 100 years later.  The Skygarth viaduct was made up of four cast iron lattice beams with a span of 30 metres.

This cache is placed along a walk along the River Eden at Temple Sowerby, and can be combined with others in the area to form a very pleasant 4.5 mile walk.  Please note that you cannot access any of these caches from the A66 dual carriageway.  We would recommend that you park either in the village or at Millgill Bridge and walk the paths.

All the caches along the river bank are placed above the river, and should be accessible under all conditions, but please be aware that the Eden does flood in this area, and take due care according to the weather.  Also, this walk has several stiles to negotiate, and the fields are often grazed by cattle, so it is not really suitable for pushchairs or disabled access and all dogs must be kept on leads.

To reach the cache, ascend the staircase at the left end and make your way along the terrace to GZ,.  We do not recommend a direct approach. If in doubt look at the photo in the listing.
