Geocache Description:

15 August 2020, 14:00 - 16:00

Picnic Tables at the Rockpool

Geocaching was made possible on May 2, 2000, by "turning off"  Selective Availability, allowing civilians to use GPS receivers to achieve a position accuracy of less than 10 meters.

To test this accuracy the first cache was placed by Dave Ulmer on May 3, 2000 in Portland, Oregon. He called it "The Great American GPS Stash Hunt" and wrote about it at "sci.geo.satellite", an online discussion group. That same day, Mike Teague found it and just three days later created a website to document caches (at that time still under the name “Stashes”).

In September 2000, Jeremy Irish founded geocaching.com and listed all available geocaches. Since then Geocaching.com has listed over 3 million geocaches placed all over the globe and one in space.

In 2010, to commemorate 10 years of geocaching this event icon (formerly the Lost and Found Event Cache) was claimed by cachers who attended events from April 30th to May 3rd. Only 362 events took place worldwide. Now on the 20th anniversary, geocachers all over the world will celebrate Geocaching's 20th birthday with a new icon and a souvenir.

Today should have been the day of Geocaching HQ's Celebration Event in Seattle. Unfortunately that event was postponed until August 21 2021 due to COVID-19. Instead lets celebrate here.
