This is the companion cache to my earlier "Long Portage South". (Note Long Portage South now archived as that monumenthas been moved It marks the north end of the Lake Owen/Namekagon River Portage that was part of the long trek from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi. Native Americans used this route for centuries before Europeans turned up. French fur traders, explorers, timber cruisers and a few scoundrels passed by here. This should be a quick park and grab, so you'll have time to read the info included in the cache. It's a few biographies that sound like pure fiction! The cache is on the ground and you'll have to part a bit of underbrush to find it. Just don't wiggle your fingers too much! (a clue is on the sign) More on local history (and other stuff) at https://detritusofempire.blogspot.com
