Kostamuksen linja-autoturma tapahtui 20 maaliskuuta 1980 linja-auton törmätessä pysäköityyn kuorma-autoon. Onnettomuuspaikka oli Neuvostoliiton puolella Vartiuksen raja-asemalta Kostamukseen johtavalla tiellä kuusi kilometriä ennen Kostamusta. Törmäyksessä kuoli välittömästi kahdeksan ja loukkaantui 33 ihmistä, joista kaksi kuoli viikon sisällä sairaalassa.
linja-auton 43 matkustajaa olivat Kostamuksessa työskenteleviä kainuulaisia, jotka olivat aamulla palaamassa töihin kotona vietetyn illan ja yön jälkeen. Onnettomuuspaikalle lähetettiin sekä Kostamuksen että Kuhmon ambulanssit ja lääkäri. Onnettomuuden uhrit vietiin ensin Kostamukseen ja tuotiin sieltä autoilla rajalle, josta heidän matkansa jatkui Suomen sairaaloihin. Ambulansseille sallittiin poikkeuksellisesti läpikulku rajalla ilman tarkastuksia ja tullimuodollisuuksia.

The Kostomuksha bus accident happened on March 20, 1980, when a bus collided with a parked truck. The scene of the accident was on the Soviet side from the Vartius border station on the road to Kostomuksha six kilometers before Kostomuksha. The collision immediately killed eight and injured 33 people, two of whom died within a week at the hospital. The 43 passengers on the bus were from Kainuu, working in Kostomuksha, returning to work in the morning after an evening and night spent at home. Visibility in 30-degree frost was good, but the sun could dazzle the driver. The road was slippery, the car windows fogged, and the driver was talking to the passengers. The bus collided unbraked with a parked, gravel-laden truck whose platform tore open the right side of the bus. The bus behind us transported some of the injured to Kostomuksha. It drove to the courtyard of the Kostomuksha health station at 6.34 in the morning. The health station had only a cleaner at work, who alerted the nurses living next to the health station. Both Kostomuksha and Kuhmo ambulances and a doctor were sent to the scene of the accident. The victims of the accident were first taken to Kostomuksha and brought from there by car to the border, from where their journey continued to Finnish hospitals. Ambulances were exceptionally allowed to pass through the border without inspections and customs formalities. A memorial to those killed in the car accident was unveiled on March 20, 2006 by the roadside.
