The “Frank Maier’s Cabin II” cache is found near the John Muir Cabin, at the end of the Auke Nu Trail. It’s a 3.2 mile hike one way. The majority of the trail is on raised planks through muskeg meadows. Elevation gain of 1,500 feet. The cache should be easy to find after completing the hike.
This is the 2nd reincarnation for this cache. The new location is closer to the cabin. The trail status in 2020 consists of new rock turnpike through park of the woods. The trail is still wet through the upper forested stretch. Some of the planks in the meadows are showing their age as they were put in over 30 years ago.
The cabin is managed by the U.S. Forest Service and can be rented to stay overnight. It’s a warming hut during the day. The cache is a small lock-n-lock container and should be available during late spring through the fall. Probably not winter friendly. There is parking available on Glacier Highway a short way past the Auke Bay Bible Church.
The cache is named for the architect who planned the cabin. Frank was a great outdoorsman and conservationist, also an avid runner. He would run the local marathon, then run home when it was over
