Geocache Description:

Welcome to the village of Ballycarry (From Irish: Baile Caraidh meaning "town of the weir or rocky ford").

Please do read the signage about - it is incredibly interesting! Here is a rundown of the area:
Templecorran is an ancient burial ground. Nestled in the Ulster Countryside, it is between the port of Larne and Carrickfergus. It sits 25 miles directly across the North Channel from the Rhinns of Galloway, a hammer-head peninsula in Scotland which can be seen on a clear day.

Here stands a burying ground. The grounds where originally an early Christian Monastary, but all that is left of the original set up is a carved stone cross. A surrounding ditch can be traced through adjacent fields, it extends much further than what can be seen and is one of the largest enclosures built arpund a site within Ireland. Templecorran was likely raided by Vikings and the Monastory suffered and did not survive, it was later reinvented in Medieval times as a Church Parish - the roofless ruins that can be seen today. What is really fascinating about this Church is that it was built as a cruciform Church, likely by Scottish Celt settlers. This is the only Cruciform Church known in Ulster making it significantly interesting. It was also discovered that there were 12 musket holes in the walls, a sign that this parish was reinforced as a place of shelter in case of attack. There are memorials in the burial grounds that date back over 1000 years.

Slightly further down the road where the main town now stands, is what once was the Norman Settlement of Redhall and Brackenberg. Numerous neolithic artifacts have been found here and a carved stone coffin lid was re-erected within the walls of Templecorran.

The cache is located outside of the burying ground. Beware of nettles. Cache is small, a blue tube with a pencil and log.
