Sir Gawain bol všeobecne považovaný za synovca kráľa Artuša. Gawainovi rodičia boli kráľ Lot of Orkney a Morgause (hoci jeho matka je údajne Anna v Geoffrey z Monmouthskej histórie kráľov Británie). Po smrti kráľa Lota sa Gawain stal hlavou orknejského klanu, ktorý v mnohých zdrojoch zahŕňa jeho bratov Agravain, Gaheris a Gareth a jeho nevlastného brata Mordreda.
Aj keď je Lancelot často označovaný ako najväčší rytier, Gawain sa niekedy označuje aj ako najväčší rytier okrúhleho stola alebo Sir Gawain Zelený rytier. Je všeobecne známe, že Sir Gawain je tiež najdôveryhodnejším priateľom Sira Lancelota a v niektorých legendách sa zdá, že je aj oprávneným dedičom trónu Camelotu po smrti kráľa Artuša .
Tam kde Sir Lancelot neuspel, skúsi svoje šťastie ďalší z rytierov okrúhleho stolu. Kráľ Artuš vysiela do boja jedného z najodvážnejších rytierov - Sira Gawaina. Bude to mať však veľmi, veľmi ťažké. Na takéto nebezpečenstvo nebol nik pripravený. Veď ako bojovať mečom a štítom proti takémuto nebezpečenstvu. Camelot však musí vzdorovať aj za cenu obetovania všetkých rytierov okrúhleho stola ! Sir Gawain was generally said to be the nephew of King Arthur. Gawain’s parents were King Lot of Orkney and Morgause (though his mother is said to be Anna in Geoffrey of Monmouth’s History of the Kings of Britain).
