今も活発な活動を続ける阿蘇山。
日本を代表する活火山であると同時に大型カルデラを有する世界的に有名な山です。そんな阿蘇山を他の山の火山灰である「アカホヤ火山灰」が覆い尽くしたなんて意外ですよね。いったいどういう事なんでしょう？

It is a world-famous mountain with a large caldera as well as an active volcano that represents Japan. It is surprising that "Akahoya Volcanic Ash," which is the volcanic ash of other mountains, completely covered Mt.Aso. What was happen?
過去１万年間に大型カルデラを形成したVEI7以上の噴火は，地球上で少なくとも８回，そのうち１回は日本列島で発生しています。日本での１回は 7,300年前に鹿児島南方の東シナ海で発生した鬼界アカホヤ噴火で，これは完新世（約1万年前以降）における地球上で最大の噴火です。
The huge eruption (VEI7) that have formed large calderas in the last 10,000 years have occurred on the earth at least eight times, and once in the Japanese archipelago. One in Japan was the Kikai Akahoya eruption, which occurred 7,300 years ago in the East China Sea south of Kagoshima, and is the largest eruption on Earth in the Holocene (since about 10,000 years ago).
鬼界アカホヤ噴火に伴う巨大火砕流は，薩摩・大隅半島、種子島、屋久島を覆い、堆積物を残しました（2つの下図）。これが幸屋(こうや)火砕流です。火砕流の噴出と同時に上空に立ち上がった噴煙には大量の細粒火山灰が含まれ，それらは偏西風により東日本にまで運ばれてアカホヤ火山灰として降り積もったのです。アカホヤ火山灰は『鍵層』として地質学的に非常に有効であり、離れた場所の地層を比べたり地層の新旧を決定する重要な手がかりに利用されています。
The huge pyroclastic flow generated by the Kikai Akahoya eruption covered Satsuma and Osumi Peninsula, Tanegashima Island, and Yakushima Island, and left a deposit (blow 2 Fig). This is named the Koya pyroclastic flow. a large amount of fine-grained volcanic ash was contained in the smoke and cloud rising in the sky at the same time as the eruption of the pyroclastic flow, and it was carried to eastern Japan by the westerly wind and accumulated as Akahoya volcanic ash. The Akahoya volcanic ash is extremely effective geologically as a "key layer", and is used as an important clue to compare geological formations at distant locations and to determine old and new geological formations.
