The Delaware Forest Association maintains a list of the largest trees in Delaware. Delaware’s “Big Tree” program is affiliated with the National Register of Big Trees, a list of the largest living specimens of each tree variety found in the continental United States. Points for circumference, height, and average crown spread are used to compare trees of the same species. Although only one of Delaware’s trees is a “National Champion Tree” (listed in the national register), Delaware has its own list of “Big Champs”. This cache will lead you to the third largest tree registered in Delaware, a sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) with a rating of 433 points. This tree is huge, and worthy of respect. You will be able to see and appreciate the Big Champ from GZ, but there is no need to approach it, as the cache is not there.
Many cars travel along the roadway near the cache, sometimes over the speed limit. Please be careful as you stop to search for the cache. Cache placed with property owners permission; please respect and keep away from any farm equipment in the area.
