Il castello di Misilmeri, nato come torre di avvistamento, fu poi circondato da mura. Ai piedi della rocca, poi, sorse il centro abitato, che prese il nome di Menzel-El-Emir, cioè Villaggio dell’Emiro: da lì derivò l’attuale nome. Il castello passò, dopo gli arabi, di mano in mano. Prima Ruggero D’Altavilla, l’ammiraglio Giorgio D’Antiochia, la diocesi di Palermo e la famiglia dei Chiaramonte, che ne fu proprietaria dal 1340 al 1800.
Nel 1800, con l’abolizione del baronaggio, venne abbandonato, poiché rimase senza proprietari. A causa delle intemperie e dell’erosione del tempo, è rimasto gravemente danneggiato, fino ad apparire come un rudere privo di valore. A risollevare le sue sorti ci hanno pensato gli scavi e i lavori di restauro del 2010.

SHORT HISTORY :
Misilmeri Castle, born as a watchtower, was then surrounded by walls. At the foot of the fortress, then, the town arose, which took the name of Menzel-El-Emir, that is, village of the Emir: from there came the current name. The castle passed, after the Arabs, from hand to hand. First Ruggero D'Altavilla, Admiral Giorgio D'Antiochia, the Diocese of Palermo and the family of Chiaramonte, who owned it from 1340 to 1800.
In 1800, with the abolition of the baronage, it was abandoned,because he remained without owners. Due to the weather and the erosion of time, it remained severely damaged, until it appeared as a worthless ruin. The excavations and restoration work of 2010 have been the first to raise its fortunes.
