DUNE
Piuttosto diffusi sino a tempi recenti, sulle nostre coste gli ambienti dunali sopravvivono integri (o apparentemente integri) in poche e limitate aree “ambienti relittuali”.

DUNES
The entire Ravenna coast is characterized by the presence of a "dune cord" typical of the sandy coasts of the lowland coasts.
The dunes that compose it, up to two meters high, are formed by the constant shaping of the wind and wave motion and the environment is particularly interesting due to the vegetation.
“Live” wreck dunes are located between the inhabited areas of Punta Marina and Marina di Ravenna, although the nuclei of greatest interest in size and naturalness, today occupy the area between Marina di Ravenna and Porto Corsini.
THE COAST AND THE BEACH
The coast is the physical place where land and sea meet, giving rise to an area of transition between the continental and marine environment characterized and determined by extremely complex phenomena. At the same time, the coast, for obvious geographical and economic reasons, is the typology of territory that undergoes the greatest demographic pressures.
By high coast we mean therefore a type of morphologically articulated coast, characterized by a certain slope and height, unlike the low coasts, which with very weak slopes, assume, near the shore line, zero topographic quotas.
The high coasts are generally environments subject to erosion, while the low coasts arise in the deposition regime. Associated with the high coasts are pocket beaches, small isolated beaches with very low geological conservation potential.
The low coasts are essentially represented by the beaches, accumulations of loose sediments of varying origins and sizes. The factors that determine the physiographic characteristics of the coastal environment are mainly mechanical (tides, waves, currents, wind) and subordinately climatic, biological and chemical. The low sediment coasts come from:
• from the surface alteration of the rocks emerging in the catchment area of reference
• from the erosion of recent poorly established deposits located in coastal areas, such as conglomerate formations. In some cases the organogenic component (shell fragments, foraminiferal shells) can be significant. The dimensions are between those typical of sands (0.063-2mm) up to and including gravels (2-128 mm) and beyond.
COASTAL DUNES
Identifying the beach as a component of the coastal depositional system (= set of various depositional environments, genetically linked to each other and characterized by specific sedimentation), the dunes constitute the transition element towards the continental environment, playing the role of functional link ( buffer strip), both physically and biotic.
Rather widespread until recent times, on our coasts the dune environments survive intact (or apparently intact) in a few and limited "relict environments" areas. The state of conservation of the dunes and beaches is closely linked to that of other ecosystems, of extreme importance, such as the wetlands behind the dunes, the lagoons and coastal lakes, the river mouths, up to the grasslands of Posidonia oceanica and other marine phanerogams, all ecosystems which, in addition to the strictly ecological value, have significant economic value, direct and indirect.
The coastal dunes represent the result of wind accumulation processes of the sands carried by the sea currents along the coast, in the back areas. Although exceptions are known, generally the formation of dunes occurs when the beach is in equilibrium or moving forward. The process by which the wind manages to transport the particles according to their speed is called deflation.
In detail, the methods are more complex, and also depend on other factors such as the size and weight of the granules, as well as their shape. With the same wind available, the transport takes place, by increasing grain sizes, by suspension, jumping, and dragging (creeping). Another mechanism, typical of the wind environment, called reptation, implemented by the granules that move others, falling can be mentioned. Sometimes more energy is needed to move very small particles due to cohesion.
Given the close correlation with the weight of the granules, the transport operates a strong selection. The result is a high degree of classification, typical of wind farms. Likewise, the continuous impact between the particles determines their wear (attrition), with relative enrichment in the most resistant mineralogical species (quartz). Their trend is generally roughly parallel to the coast line. Typically, the dunes have an asymmetrical transverse profile, with a gentler slope on the side exposed to the wind, and steeper on the opposite side, where the granules fall by gravity.
HOW COASTAL DUNES ARE FORMED
Wind, sand and vegetation are essential for the formation of the coastal dunes. The dry sand is taken in charge by the wind that blows from the sea and transports it to land. In its path, this wind flow impacts the bushes of plants, losing its sediment load, which thus accumulates behind the plant. When there is a lot of sand available, therefore on very wide beaches, this process allows the formation of embryonic dunes that grow higher and continue to form a cord parallel to the coast of incipient avandunes, active in the mutual exchange of sediment with the emerged and submerged beach. Over time, these avandunes can gradually change into stabilized dunes, thanks above all to the vegetation that evolves hand in hand in a richer and more varied community.
FUNZIONE DELLA DUNA COSTIERA
One of the main functions is to counteract the rising sea salt water. This occurs because the sand-formed dune manages to accumulate a large amount of water of meteoric origin, a lens of fresh water, which with its weight exerts pressure on the fresh / salt water interface. Where the dunes and therefore fresh water are lacking. Salt water advances underground towards the hinterland; this phenomenon is very dangerous because it determines the salification of the surface ground waters, which are those used by plants, both wild and cultivated.
Coastal dunes are also an important component of the land-sea transition system in continuous adaptation to changes related to different time and space scales. They play a fundamental role of resilience within the coastal system since, in addition to the intrinsic naturalistic value, the accumulation of the sandy settlement of the dunes can represent a form of natural, functional and efficient defense against erosion, the salinisation of the aquifers, and last but not least, the risk of marine entry. These aspects take on particular and significant value in light of the ongoing climate changes which see a progressive increase in storms and consequent potential floods that may affect the area.
FLORA AND FAUNA
The plants and animals that inhabit the dune are very particular. Over time they have developed special adaptations to live in a difficult environment: high temperatures, salty winds, marine floods, lack of nutrients. They are called "psammophiles", that is, sand lovers. Among the most important species are Ammophila arenaria and Elitrigia juncea. Among the dunicoli animals we find the Fratino a species that lives and nests on the beaches and dunes, strongly threatened by the disappearance of its habitat, the dominant species in these environments is the gastropod Theba pisana, widespread especially in the amophiletes, it is to be considered a key stones species.
