The year 4-8 class at National Park school, called Te Whiowhio and Paretetaitonga, spent five weeks doing lots of learning about geocaching and the geocaching culture. They have created ten geocaches and placed them around the National Park village area. Each cache includes information about an aspect of National Park village life. Mt Ngauruhoe is one of the beautiful volcanoes that stand proud in the Tongariro National Park.
Mt Ngauruhoe erupted 45 times in the 20th century, most recently in 1977. During one of these eruptions, Ngauruhoe most unfortunately blew off its top.
Mt Ngauruhoe is an active stratovolcano (cone-shaped volcano) and is the youngest vent in the Tongariro volcanic complex on the Central Plateau in the North Island, and first erupted about 2,500 years ago. Apparently Ngauruhoe is a secondary cone to Mt Tongariro, not a separate mountain.
Nature is beautiful, but it is also dangerous. Volcanoes hold deadly things such as avalanches, lahars, cliffs and eruptions. You can be safe by bringing warm winter gear. It's also good to bring a willing partner so you can keep an eye on each other.
Mt Ngauruhoe holds dangers, but is one of the great treasures Earth has blessed us with. But be cautious, the mountains may be beautiful, but they can be dangerous too, weather conditions can change up the mountains with no warning, always be prepared for anything. Please respect them and don’t litter, because you could kill some great, rare creatures that live in our area.
