Geocache Description:

A redux of the original, hidden with lilgeodave.

This cache is a continuation of the series of caches delineating the route of the Helena Valley Irrigation District canal as it flows through the valley.

The Helena Valley Irrigation District was formed in part to provide mitigation for the irrigated land that was inundated when Canyon Ferry Reservoir was built. Currently, 18,000 acres are irrigated through this project. The project was multi-purpose, and included building capacity for municiple water for the city of Helena. The Helena Valley Regulating Reservoir, which feeds the canal that runs clockwise around the valley, also provides a significant amount of recreation and wildlife habitat. Salmon are a favored target of fisherman, especially through the ice, and when snagging is legal in the fall.

This cache is placed near the 17th road crossing after the canal leaves the regulating reservoir.

The cache container has been replaced with a DNA sample tube. The cool original container and its camo as it was originally hidden were destroyed with a change to safer fencing. This one is close to a walking/biking trail, though it is not wheelchair accessible, and may present difficulties for those with mobility issues. Please watch kids near the water. Swimming is NOT allowed, falling in is strongly discouraged. Enjoy!
