Geocache Description:

Oysters of Tomales Bay

A few weeks back I kayaked in Tomales Bay for the first time, it was foggy and overcast and didn't clear up all day.

That day I placed a cache which turned out to be on National Seashore land and not allowed. Today I went back, it was perhaps the most glorious day of the year; I retrieved the cache and moved it. While looking at the map I figured I had two options, go south to state park land by Hearts Desire beach or north back on the mainland side, and since it might have been possible to hike to it from Hearts Desire, I chose north as you'll need to paddle to find it and because I'd seen a spot on the map that allowed a similar style of placement.

It just so happens that in placing this cache I kayaked past the oyster farms at the northern end of the bay and was interested to see just how they're farmed, how the cages have changed and evolved over the years and how many oysters can actually be inside one cage. I hope you take a minute to view the farms also, given that you've already paddled ~1.4 miles from the nearest launch.

Just of note you CANNOT hike to this cache!

Launching at Keys Creek is closer but the paddle will be more challenging due to it being very shallow along Walker Creek. Nick's Cove launch is a little bit further away but the paddle will be easier and more interesting. Please come prepared, I suggest starting earlier in the day when the weather is calmer, if the wind is up the water will be rough and sit in kayaks can get flooded without a spray skirt. You will also need to get out of your kayak and may get wet feet but the mud is only 1" deep, I wear neoprene boots, so my feet stay warm even if wet.

Please be aware of your limitations and do not risk/attempt this in rough weather or if you're concerned about your ability.

BRING A PEN!

Please Enjoy the Adventure!
