Geocache Description:


This De Havilland Vampie A79-109 was manufactured by de Havilland Australia in Melbourne.

It had a maximum speed of 882 km/h and a range of 1960 km. Pilots referred to them as Sports Cars because they were small, fast and very manoeuvrable. They were also very simple in their construction and hence were very reliable.

This vampire entered service with RAAF On 10/11/50 Issued to RAAF at 2AD
28/11/50 Issued 78 Wing
6/03/51 Received de Havilland ex 78 Wing
4/05/51 Nene engine CAC2 allotted for installation still not received
Approved for disposal 23/05/69. 

It was erected on this pole in 1971 by Forbes Municipal Council to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the RAAF.
