Geocache Description:

It's a beautiful area of Alberta along this road, and there also happen to be some interesting rocks located here. The coulee to the South is a very picturesque snapshot of the foothills of Alberta, and the Cayley Hutterite Colony is located here. Besides the beautiful landscape, you may pass farms of sheep, alpacas, horses, and possibly spot all sorts of wildlife, too.

A couple of these rocks are definitely local sandstone, but the other two look to us like glacial erratics, though probably not in their original locations. There is some sort of excavation going on in the hills here, so it's possible they were moved here at some point.

If you are not familiar with glacial erratics, they are chunks of quartzite rock that have been transported on top of glaciers/ice sheets during the last major glaciation of Alberta. They are "erratic" in that they are not native to this part of Alberta, but started their journey far to the North of here, near Jasper, Alberta. Slowly but surely, they were brought along by the moving glaciers, and as the climate warmed, these sometimes gargantuan rocks were dropped onto the prairies of Alberta in a dinstinctive line known as the Foothills Erratics Train. Their shapes and locations are endlessly varied, and we love looking out for them as we drive the roads of Alberta. We hope you find them interesting too.
