Connaissez-vous la légende du Pont du Diable ?
Alors que les moines de Gellone et d'Aniane ne ménagent pas leurs efforts pour la construction du pont traversant l’Hérault au débouché des gorges sur la plaine, on constate chaque matin en abordant les lieux, que les travaux réalisés la veille sont systématiquement détruits. Les deux congrégations monastiques comprennent très vite que leur projet subi des entreprises de sabotages nocturnes et en appelle à la protection de leur Saint Patron Guilhem qui un soir, décide de se rendre seul sur les lieux pour y interpeller les éventuels malfaiteurs. Après quelques heures, posté à attendre, Guilhem constate que le Diable déguisé dans un costume de bouc noir fracasse les travaux du pont. Guilhem l’interpelle alors :
- « Satan, je t’ai reconnu dans ton ridicule apparat. Pourquoi dévastes-tu ainsi l’ouvrage de mes frères ? »
- « C’est que je n’ai que faire des entreprises de tes chiens de serviteurs sur terre. »
- « Satan, plutôt que de nous affronter ici, essayons de régler notre contentieux intelligemment. »
- « Pour une fois, je suis d’accord avec toi Guilhem ! Alors écoute-moi bien. Je te propose de construire un pont le plus solide qui soit en trois jours. En échange, tu t’engages à me livrer l’âme d’un de tes chiens de serviteurs. Celle du premier qui traversera le pont sera pour moi et je l’emmènerai avec moi au fond de l’abîme des enfers. »
Sans répondre aux provocations du Diable et avec la plus sereine des assurances, Guilhem lui rétorqua :
- « L’âme d’un de mes chiens de serviteur ! Tu ne saurais mieux dire Satan ! Retrouvons-nous en ces lieux dans trois jours et trois nuits lorsque tu te seras exécuté. »
Sur ces mots, Guilhem s’en retourna au village.
Trois jours et trois nuits s’écoulèrent et ce fut le moment pour Guilhem et ses compagnons de retourner au pont pour constater la fin des travaux. Arrivés aux abords du chantier, Satan les accueille sur l’ouvrage qu’il vient d’achever, la mine réjouit à l’idée d’emporter avec lui une âme humaine. Il s’adressa alors à Guilhem en ces termes :
- « Je me suis exécuté, l’ouvrage est terminé. J’ai rempli ma part du contrat. A toi maintenant de me donner ce que tu m’as promis. »
Guilhem sortit alors un os de sa veste, le jeta de l’autre côté du Pont et le chien qui se tenait à ses côtés traversa le Pont à grandes enjambées. Alors que le Diable ne comprenait pas la manœuvre, Guilhem s’exclama :
- « Satan, tu vois que je respecte mes engagements. Il y a trois jours de cela, tu me demandais l’âme d’un de mes chiens de serviteur. Et bien, voici le plus fidèle de tous. »
- « ARRRRGH !! Guilhem !! Tu m’as trompé. Ma vengeance sera terrible ! »
Dans sa colère, le Diable tenta de détruire le pont mais l’ayant promis le plus solide possible, il ne put y parvenir. Enfin, comprenant qu’il ne pourrait se venger, il se jeta de dépit dans les eaux de l’Hérault et creusa le gouffre noir dans sa chute.
Parfois, en période de crue, la colère du Diable semble se réveiller et ses hurlements surgissent du fond du gouffre.
C’est ainsi que pendant de très nombreuses années, les pèlerins et gens de passage qui traversaient le pont se munissaient de pierres pour les jeter dans le fleuve dans l’espoir d’y laisser le Diable au fond.
Do you know the legend of the Devil's Bridge ?
While the monks of Gellone and Aniane do not spare their efforts for the construction of the bridge crossing the Hérault at the mouth of the gorges on the plain, we note every morning when approaching the place, that the work carried out the day before is systematically destroyed. . - "I don't care about the businesses of your servant dogs on earth. "
- “Satan, rather than confronting us here, let's try to settle our dispute intelligently. "
- "For once, I agree with you Guilhem! So listen to me carefully. I suggest you build a strongest bridge in three days. In return, you agree to hand over the soul of one of your servant dogs to me. The one who crosses the bridge first will be for me and I will take her with me to the bottom of the abyss of hell. "
Without responding to the Devil's provocations and with the most serene assurances, Guilhem retorted:
- "The soul of one of my servant dogs! You could not better say Satan! Let’s meet here in three days and three nights after you have done so. "
With these words, Guilhem returned to the village.
Three days and three nights passed and it was time for Guilhem and his companions to return to the bridge to see the end of the work. Arrived at the edge of the construction site, Satan welcomes them to the work he has just completed, the face rejoices at the idea of taking with him a human soul. He then addressed Guilhem in these terms:
- "I complied, the work is finished. I have fulfilled my end of the bargain. Now it's up to you to give me what you promised me. "
Guilhem then took a bone out of his jacket, threw it across the bridge, and the dog standing beside him strode across the bridge. While the Devil did not understand the maneuver, Guilhem exclaimed:
- "Satan, you see that I respect my commitments. Three days ago you asked me for the soul of one of my servant dogs. Well, here is the most faithful of all. "
- "ARRRRGH !! Guilhem !! You cheat on me. My revenge will be terrible ! "
In his anger, the Devil tried to destroy the bridge but having promised it as solid as possible, he could not succeed. Finally, realizing that he could not take revenge, he threw himself in spite into the waters of the Hérault and dug the black chasm in his fall.
Sometimes, in times of flood, the anger of the Devil seems to wake up and his howls arise from the bottom of the abyss.
This is how, for many, many years, pilgrims and people passing through the bridge used stones to throw them into the river in the hope of leaving the Devil behind.
