The Forth River originates in the central highlands on the southern slopes of Mount Pelion West and travels 95km to its estuarine mouth on the Bass Straight.
In the mid 1800’s it was one of the busiest shipping ports on the North West Coast with small ships and punts using the river to ship timber and freight to the mainland and to bring in supplies for the local residents and farmers.
Today the river is a part of the Mersey-Forth power project, which includes three hydroelectric power stations including Cethana Power Station, Devils Gates Power Station and Paloona Power Station. The total power generated by these stations exceeds 300,000 kilowatts.
