Gígjökull is a channel belonging to Eyjafjallajökull which is both glacier and stratovolcanoe. Mt. Eyjafjallajökull is one of the largest active volvanoes in Iceland.
After the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull volcano in 1821 a break in the northern caldera rim was created and Gígjökull glacier–tongue started coming down from the crater, hence the name meaning “Crater glacier”. Icelanders sometimes called it Falljökull ("Ice Fall") because the glacier was descending very rapidly down the steep mountain slope.
There was an ice lagoon called Lónið in front of the glacier which disappeared after the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull in 2010 so it's now possible to go all the way to the glacier terminus (snout) where marked trial leads starting close to the cache coordinates.
Keep in mind that to reach the cache coordinates you need a 4x4 car which can pass at least 10 river crossings with few of them possibly being very deep depending on the season and the weather! Even if your car can make it be sure YOU can make it!
The cache
The cache is hidden close to a parking where the trail to the glacier starts (see the SPOILER pictures should you required help). We encourage you to hike all the way (about 2 km one way) to see the glacier from up close. It is is also possible to drive close to the glacier but the river crossing on the way are deep and requires special vehicles.
