Geocache Description:

The cache is situated in the Migurra Reserve which is between Cootamundra and Bethungra.  It is well signposted. There is ample parking adjacent to the entry to the reserve.  Go to the left after entering the reserve and follow the walking track through ironbark and grey box woodland until you reach the picnic area where there is a table and seating with a view of Gardiner's Lookout on the hill on the other side of the highway.

The reserve is an example of what the country looked like before farming activities and the railway changed the landscape.

Frank Gardiner was a notorious bushranger in the 1860s and his gang including Ben Hall and Johnny Gilbert held up the Lachland Gold Escort near Eugowra in 1862.  The value of the gold and currency stolen was worth 22,000 pounds then or more than $8 million today.  There is no record of Gardiner actually carrying out any hold-ups in the Cootamundra area, however Hall and Gilbert were active.

The lookout would have provided an excellent view of travellers making slow progress up the steep hill from Bethungra.  The is also an extensive view in the opposite direction towards Cootamundra.

The cache is near the picnic table.  There are some trees that may slightly affect the co-ordinates so the hint is "ground level."  There is a small logbook & pencil.  Please ensure that it is properly closed before replacing the cache..
