Geocache Description:

This cache is located on the former site of the iconic Golden Toaster chapel across the street from the Chase Fine Arts Center. It's a quick find and big enough to leave small trackable items!

The Golden Toaster was built by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; dedicated in 1962 by USU's 10th president Daryl Chase and Church President David O. Mckay. USU aquired the building in 2011 as part of a land swap agreement with the Church, and later demolished in Jan 2015. Although the university has not announced any plans for the lot, it currently serves as a public grass area commonly used for outdoor games and family picnics.

In a Deseret News article by Rhea Smith, she describes how her husband Johnson gave the building its popular nickname in 1969 while president of the LDSSA club. She relates:

"For the rest of the school year, in LDSSA executive and council meetings, this church building was referred to as the Golden Toaster, and the name quickly caught on.

"Through the years, we have fondly heard about the Golden Toaster. Our children, while attending USU, would call our home in Arkansas and say, 'Dad, they are still calling the church building the Golden Toaster!'

They would proudly relate how they would tell the person who referred to the Golden Toaster the story behind it and that their dad was the person who came up with the comparison and the name."
