Il toponimo Montalto, che deriverebbe dall'altezza del monte su cui sorse il primo insediamento, si trova attestato per la prima volta nel 1163 e, successivamente, in vari atti notarili del 1337. Il 14 dicembre del 1336 questo comune fu sottomesso agli Estensi, nome con cui si indica la famiglia d'Este che governò a lungo a Ferrara e sul territorio modenese. Montalto si trova a circa 6 Km da Montese. E’ divisa in due parti: Montalto Vecchio, dove si trovano la chiesa di San Giorgio e Le Lastrelle, il centro più recente.
Nel territorio di Montalto sono presenti due principali cartatteristiche: le doline e vari castagneti ad impianto matildico.
Le doline sono delle conche che si creano nel terreno e sono dovute al fenomeno del carsismo. La loro grandezza e la loro profondità dipendono dalla quantità di rocce calcaree presenti nel terreno, in alcuni casi possono arrivare anche a un chilometro di diametro.
Nei castagneti l’aggettivo “matildico” deriva dal nome della contessa Matilde di Canossa, vissuta nell’XI secolo d.C., che dominò un feudo molto grande che comprendeva la Lombardia, l’Emilia Romagna e la Toscana. Amatissima dai suoi sudditi, governò anche le nostre terre e, per sfamare la gente dell’Appennino, fece piantare tanti castagni e riuscì a migliorare la produttività dei castagneti, in un momento in cui (siamo nel Medioevo), la patata non esisteva ancora nelle nostre zone. L’impianto matildico indica il modo in cui sono disposti i castagni: ai vertici di triangoli sfalsati ad una distanza di circa 10 metri.

The toponym Montalto, which would derive from the height of the mountain on which the first settlement was built, is attested for the first time in 1163 and, subsequently, in various notarial deeds of 1337. On December 14th 1336 this municipality was subjected to the Estensi, the name used to indicate the Este family who ruled for a long time in Ferrara and in the Modena area. Montalto is located about 6 km from Montese. It is divided into two parts: Montalto Vecchio, where the church of San Giorgio is located and Le Lastrelle, the most recent center.
In the territory of Montalto there are two main characteristics: the sinkholes and various chestnut groves with a Matildic plant.
The sinkholes are hollows that are created in the ground and are due to the karst phenomenon. Their size and depth depend on the quantity of calcareous rocks present in the ground, in some cases they can even reach a kilometer in diameter.
In the chestnut woods, the adjective "Matildic" derives from the name of the Countess Matilda di Canossa, who lived in the 11th century AD, who dominated a very large fiefdom that included Lombardy, Emilia Romagna and Tuscany. Loved by his subjects, he also ruled our lands and, to feed the people of the Apennines, he planted many chestnut trees and managed to improve the productivity of the chestnut groves, at a time when (we are in the Middle Ages), the potato did not yet exist in the our areas. The Matildic plant indicates the way in which the chestnut trees are arranged: at the vertices of staggered triangles at a distance of about 10 meters.
