Geokayaching along the Augusta Canal
The Augusta Canal is a favorite for kayakers. It is also a favorite for geocachers as there are a number of geocaches along the banks of the canal. So, come out to the canal and enjoy some geokayaching. You will find this one dangling from a tree limb.
There are three main locations from where you may launch your non-motorized watercraft.
- Headgates at Savannah Rapids Park. You may rent canoes, kayaks and paddleboards from here.
- Lake Olmstead (waypoint provided)
- Enterprise Mill (waypoint provided)
Savannah Rapids Park to Enterprise Mill. You may float and paddle down the canal to Enterprise Mill, which is about 6.5 miles. You will probably want to make plans to shuttle vehicles, boats, and people between the two locations.
Lake Olmstead round trip or to Enterprise Mill. If you launch from Lake Olmstead, you could paddle out to the canal and then head downstream to the geocache. Once found, you could paddle upstream to return to Lake Olmstead or continue downstream to Enterprise Mill. Of course, you will need to plan shuttling back and forth if you opt to continue to Enterprise Mill.
Enterprise Mill. You could launch from and return to here. You will paddle upstream and against the current to the geocache. On the way back you will have an easy paddle with the current.
