What you are actually seeing here is a "Ransome Steam Enginge circa 1850-1950.This unit was donated to the George museum in 1993 when the Urban Shoe factory closed down after some 70 years in business. This steam engine was used to drive the large tanning drum in which hides and skins were de-haired during the leather making process.
During the second World war, the engine was used to saw wood for making crates, in which army boots were shipped North to supply the troops.
