Geocache Description:

Prožura - crkva sv. Martina

Martin (zaštitnik siromaha) i sv. Nikola (zaštitnik pomoraca  i ribara). Uz Crkvu svete Trojice lokrumski benediktinci sve do kraja 18.st.

Trojstva do sv. Roka.

Prozura (Progiorra or Prosùra) originated in the Middle Ages. During the Republic of Dubrovnik, it was a place of rest for Dubrovnik nobles.

Prožura is one of the few places that cannot be seen from the sea, but Prožurani have always followed the events at sea closely. Thus, the locals had set up scouts to announce the arrival of pirates, and the evacuation of the villagers to Kaštio, a defensive square tower from the 17th century, would begin immediately. The defense was very carefully organized, so that on the first level of the tower were placed animals and material values, on the second level were the elderly, women and children, while on the third level were all able men who used hot olive oil to defend against pirates. oil.

There are three churches in Prožura: the church of St. Trinity, which bears the characteristics of Dubrovnik's Gothic chapels and was probably built by the Bekredinians of Lokrum when they came to the estate in Prožura in 1477. There is a Romanesque bronze crucifix and a rustic Gothic style crucifix from the 15th century. on which St. Vlaho (patron saint of Dubrovnik), st. Martin (protector of the poor) and St. Nicholas (protector of sailors and fishermen). Along with the Church of the Holy Trinity, the Lokrum Benedictines until the end of the 18th century. they lived and worked in a monastery from which the remains are visible today and a well-preserved coat of arms on the outer wall.

Church of St. Martin, the patron saint of the village, with a small porch from the 14th century, is located above Prožura and in front of the village cemetery. Sv. Mratin is celebrated on 11.11. Holy Mass in the church. Church of St. Roka is from a slightly younger age. In Prožura, the day of St. Roka 16.08. every year, in a procession going from St. Trinity to St. Roch. Cross from St. Trinity is carried through the village to the church of St. Roka and you celebrate the Holy Mass dedicated to St. Roka (in Prožura it is considered that he saved the village from the plague!). After the Mass, the procession returns with the cross to the church of St. Trinity, but by a different path above the field and around the village.

Pavao Gracić, bishop of Ston from 1635 to 1652, was born in Prožura.
