Geocache Description:

Germania Mine - Bonus Cache for Infamous Hurley Adventure Lab

The cache can only be found after completing the adventure lab, where you'll be given the final coordinates in parts after each location is answered correctly.

While you can't see any mine remains today, this spot near the top of Germania Hill and Germania Road is where all the action was back in 1885.

The Germania Iron Mine is one of the oldest in the area. Historically the site has been associated with the Gogebic Iron Mining District and was first discovered in 1848 by A. Randall. The Germania Iron Mine had a short run with the first year of production in 1885 and produced until 1912.  The ore is composed of goethite and hematite and was first mined as open pit. Shafts were later sunk and reached a depth of 1,680 ft. The first ore ever shipped to Ashland from the Gogebic Range came from the Germania Mine, in July 1885 on 13 railroad cars. It was the first ore ever delivered to the Ashland ore dock and was celebrated as a historical event in mining enterprise.
