The building across the street from the cache was one of Mount Vernon's first schools. Built in 1891, it was also one of the first brick buildings in town. The current building was built in 1936 and is one of Mount Vernon's oldest buildings 'on the hill'. It is no longer being used as a school, and there are no plans to tear it down.
