Take a break , enjoy the serenity and look around. There is a seat nearby should you like to enjoy the sounds of the Kiewa river and its bird life.
The name Kiewa is an Aboriginal word, derived from cy-a-nun-a, meaning sweet, and wher-ra, meaning water. The Kiewa River flows generally north northwest, and drops 525 metres over its 109 kilometre course but is highly regulated upstream of here due to the 4 hydro power stations. The last holding point is the pondage at Mt Beauty and by walking upstream and past the inflow point you can see for yourself the impact that hydro schemes have on stream flow, habitats and riparian vegetation.
Further down stream however where the river runs differently, amongst other things you may spot the solitary platypus that do like the clear "sweet waters". Water quality and river habitat are crucial to platypus that need eucalypts and wattles growing on the banks.
According to the Patypus Conservancy "the occurrence of ......gravel, pebbles, cobbles and large rocks" along with "coarse organic matter in the channel, such as fallen logs, branches, bark, twigs and leaves" are also important. So there you have it - looking pretty good here for playpus on the Kiewa although the cache itself is about 6 metres off the track farm side.
