This small lock and lock is located on the 3,147 m summit of Mount Owen. Done in combination of an ascent of Mount Cline, expect a significantly long round-trip distance of 26.5 kilometers with an elevation gain of 2,200 meters. If your goal is only Mount Owen and not Mount Cline, expect 24 km round trip and 1,800 m of gain on generally easy scrambling terrain.
Mount Owen:
Mount Owen is situated just 1.5 km SW of the mighty Mount Cline. Unlike Mount Cline, however, Mount Owen is basically an easy scramble on 2nd and 3rd class terrain. There are no glaciers to cross and absolutely no need to bring a rope. Despite the technical ease relative to Mount Cline, Mount Owen is still a significant challenge in terms of the distance and elevation gain required. Although it could be done in a single day, a bivy at the Cline Lakes would make for a great 2 day adventure.
From Cline Lakes, ascend up to an obvious col just west of Mount Owen. Pick up a decent trail through the scree and follow it easily to the summit of Mount Owen - 2nd class. Despite being shorter than some of the surrounding peaks, the views from Mount Owen are outstanding and dozens of 11,000' peaks can be seen on a clear day. It truly is a beautiful peak!
If Mount Cline is your goal, I would highly recommend the side trip to Mount Owen on the way home. It took us 30 min to reach the summit from the col, with 700 m distance and 250 m of gain.
I guarantee your adventure to this backcountry peak won't disappoint - enjoy!
