This geocache is located on a very fun and easy 5.5 sport rock climbing route called "Tyrannosaurus" at the Family Krag climbing crag near Grotto Canyon. This route is the easiest and shortest climb at the Family Krag, and was also our favourite climb at the crag. Please note that this geocache represents an extreme challenge requiring specialized rock climbing skills and equipment.
Family Krag, with Tyrannosaurus circled:
The Family Krag is a great small crag with really fun, steep and juggy climbing. The routes are short and the grades are generally pretty easy. It's the perfect crag for an evening of climbing or a relaxed day of climbing with the family. Only 4 quickdraws and an anchor setup are needed to climb the rightmost 3 routes. Dadio's Delight is a gear climb that I don't recommend you lead on gear - the protection is pretty poor. Rather, I recommend leading Rainbow and setting up a top rope on the anchor of Dadio's Delight.
The routes from left to right are:
A - Dadio's Delight - 5.9, 15 m, gear to 4" (pink TCU useful)
B - Rainbow - 5.6, 15 m, sport (4 bolts)
C - Marshmallow Unicorn - 5.7, 15 m, sport (4 bolts)
D - Tyrannosaurus - 5.5, 13 m, sport (4 bolts)
All routes were set up by Kim Heidel in the summer of 2020. As this is a brand new crag in a fairly quiet location, be especially careful of loose rock on the routes.
As for the approach, simply head up through Grotto Canyon and continue up the drainage past the hoodoos and the Armadillo Buttress to find the crag right at the base of the drainage. Expect a one-way hike of 2.5 km with 200 m of gain, much of which is off-trail up a rubbly creek bed - about 45 min from the parking area.
Note that climbing gear and experience sport climbing is essential for this cache. This is a significant challenge requiring specialized climbing skills, equipment and a knowledgeable partner as a belayer. You will need experience lead climbing as this climb cannot safely be set up for top rope or rappel from above. Climb safely and have fun!
