Geocache Description:

Another cache to take you off the beaten path in Bali.

The subak system is a complex ancient traditional cooperative irrigation network in Bali that was developed in the 9th century.  It is and integrated system that exemplefies the core Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana - the three pillars of community life, a balanced relationship between humans, the earth and the gods drawing together the realm of spirit, the human world and nature.  In 2012, subak was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site indicating its outstanding universal value of cultural or natural property which deserves protection for the benefit of all humanity.

Along the trail to the cache you will see some original sections of subak and a newer portion... but to see and appreciate the purpose of this intricate network of waterways (the rice paddys), you will have to do another trek in the area.  Don't worry, you don't have to go far! While this cache takes you into the forest, I have included another Waypoint for the start of a nice short trek to a rice field view.  Or you can go find the Tegalalang Terrace Treasure geocache (https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC8YH2X)

If you come in the late afternoon you will enjoy watching the kids playing in the river nearby!
