Masking and Basking Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

OReviewer: As there's been no cache to find for a long time or has had no owner response for at least 30 days, I'm archiving it to keep it from showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements.

Please note that if geocaches are archived by a reviewer or Geocaching HQ for lack of maintenance, they are not eligible for unarchival.

Geocache Description:

This cache was placed Labor Day 2020 which signifies the end of another summer season in Avalon. This one has been like no other. We now begin the road back to our pre-covid routines. We found ourselves geocaching in the south jersey beach area during the peak of the COVID isolaton and wanted to commemorate the end of this season with a cache of our own.

Avalon is our favorite spot and will likely become yours. This cache is placed near one of the north end dead ends where you can see the Atlantic Ocean meeting the bay( Townsends Sound) at Towsend's Inlet and the bridge that connects the towns of Avalon to Sea Isle City NJ to the north. The Lenni-Lenape Indians lived in this area and would fish and gather quahog shells from the beach to make beads. The land was purchased and developed as Sea Isle City and Strathmere in the late 1600's. The bridge was contructed in the 1940's and has had a history of closures for repairs which continues today. You never really know whether it is going to be open or closed! Avalon is one of the two towns than make up the barrier island, Seven Mile Island. It was purchased for $380 in 1722 and known first as Leamings Island. Now the land is worth just a tad more! Avalon truly has some of the worlds most beautiful beaches and the town oozes with charm .

The large rock barriers you see here have been strategically placed here and on the ocean side near 8th street to help prevent further storm erosions.  Enjoy the search and good luck on finding our Masking and Basking cache. (6/14/21- updated the size thanks to fellow-geocacher MusicAthleteJB. PS If you are old enough to vaccinate, most no longer need to mask. If you have chosen not to vaccinate, please further educate yourself to the risks and benefits at Vaccine.chop.edu so we do not see a rise in cases and deaths again next winter!)
