宝亀年間（770～780)光仁天皇の御代にこの地に祭られ、延喜式神名帳(成立927年)に残る式内社でもあります。
文明13年(1481年)時の城主小峯政朝が神社において一万句奉納の連歌会をおこないました。
著名の連歌師、宗祇が西国からはるばるこの地にやって来たのも、この会に出るためでした。
文化3年(1783年)松平大和守により『鹿嶋大神宮』の額が、寛政7年(1796年)には松平定信公より
『盾無し(たてなし)のよろい』(市文化財)も奉納されています。
また、古来より歌枕にある「転寝の森(うたたねのもり)」は、当神社の飛地境内で、東へ約300m程のところにあります。
【白河提灯まつり】
9月敬老の日の直前の金・土・日開催(2年に1度の開催。西暦偶数年開催)
日本三大提灯まつり(白河・弥彦・一色)の一つに数えられている白河提灯まつりは、白河地方の総鎮守として、
古くから人々の尊崇を集めてきた鹿嶋神社の例祭として、四世紀に渡り隆盛を極め、白河の人々の精神文化の歴史、
いわば心のよりどころとして、伝えられてきました。

Built in the Houki era, it was built in the generation of Emperor Mitsuhito,
and it is a shrine that remains in the Enki-God-Name Book (established 927).
In 1783, the signboard of "Kashima Grand Shrine" was dedicated by Matsudaira Yamato,
and in 1796, "Yoroi without a shield" was also dedicated by Prince Matsudaira Sadanobu.
In addition, "Utatane no Mori" is about 300m to the east of our shrine.
[Shirakawa Lantern Festival]
Held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday just before September Respect for the Aged Day (held once every two years)
It is counted as one of the three major lantern festivals in Japan (Shirakawa, Yahiko, Isshiki).
It has been going on for four centuries.
