When we first started caching there was a cache that was published out here (June 2005) that was really cool. It was a cache, we were told, that wasn't for a family with young children...so it was one of those caches we did on the rare occasion we didn't have the kids with us. Over the years I have thought about this area and after some discussions with Ruffledostrich, we decided to come out to explore the area again, but not really remembering the crazy terrain, we decided to bring a 4 year old with us. We will just say we all survived and had a great adventure, but we don't recommend bringing the littles. There are many routes to and from this cache, but if your kid is one that will want to be carried through the water and up and down the steep steep hills, don't bring them along.
Although you can take any route you wish, you shouldn't have to bushwhack at all and should be able to follow ATV trails all of the way to the cache. Beware of the ATVs and also of hunters...so wearing orange isn't necessarily a bad idea. Be prepared for muddy muddy conditions (especially in the late winter/spring) and bring along your hiking stick as there will probably be some elevation changes. The recommended route has 3 water crossings and a steep up hill and a steep downhll, although there is probably a route that is pretty flat...just not always passable. There are routes to avoid the water, but they will require going off trail and doing some crazy things, so please bring along a caching partner or two.
Our recommended route:
Park at the suggested parking coords. This parking is just outside of the beep beep tunnel and across from the infamous greenman's tunnel that is being used for salt, but hopefully soon will be part of the montour trail. Once you park, cross the creek and follow the trails up the hill. This hill is very very steep!! Be careful. Once you get up, navigate to the reference point by going over and down the other side. Just follow the trails. Once you are down and you are done exploring and taking pictures, cross the creek to the other side and find the cache. The cache is hidden up the hill and hopefully is secure and won't make its way down. Please try to help keep it secure behind the tree. Once you are done with the cache, take any route back you would like, just be careful. We would love to hear about your route and your experience and would love to see your pictures.
This container is a large PVC bison tube that has had the threads greased. Inside the cache there are a couple packs of vasoline to regrease the threads as needed. There is also a logbook and a bunch of trade items. Please keep everything in bags. Sadly I don't think I left a writing utensil, so MAKE SURE YOU BRING A PEN!!
Two prizes are also included for the FTF and the 2TF. Please take pictures and let us know what prize you took.
Congnratulations to CaptDen24t for being the first to sign the log! They signed in only 2.5 hours after the cache was published.
