Väčšinou udávali vzdialenosť do najbližšej dediny.

A nebol sám.

At the access road to Šoldov – abolished medieval village – there is located a pillar called “Janošík´s footprint”. It is an old milestone (the pillar is made of sandstone) on the medieval royal road connecting villages of Štrba and Važec, and it is the last preserved monument of its kind in the large surrounding area. The pillar itself served as the milestone on the road built by Louis I in 1364. This road replaced the so called Via Magna, which did not go through Štrba or Lučivná, but it headed from Šoldov directly to Mengusovce.

Word Štrba and some Roman numerals are visible on the milestone. They mostly defined distance to the nearest village. Prints of feet and hands of unknown origin are also visible on the milestone. According to the legend, they were made by Juraj Jánošík – a legendary outlaw captain, who wanted to leave some sign of his activities within territory around Štrba. Loaded with a bag full of coins he looked upon Štrba from this pillar, and thus he made permanent footprints into the stone. It is proven by the testimony protocol, in which Jánošík confirmed that he was on Hovald /one of the hills within the village bounds between Štrba and Važec/. Items from Jánošík´s robbery of German officer were found at some Štrba farmers, where Jánošík hide them.

We can legitimately doubt that the legend depict a true story. But the truth is that the legendary outlaw captain was really active in this territory at his times. And he was not alone. In the past, there was a deep forest between Štrba and Važec and plenty of outlaws were active in these woods. And as many robberies took place on Hovald, Maria Theresa order to cut down this deep forest in the middle of the 18th century.
