Geocache Description:

In honor of all the Soldiers and their families who have served on Fort Ord and are still serving on what's left of it.

It was on this field on September 30, 1994, that Fort Ord was closed after 77 years of service to the United States Army. It was the largest military base that had ever been closed at the time.

Closing ceremony on YouTube: https://youtu.be/ChxuzRPm9Ok (The video is about 30 minutes long, but you can kind of see what this place looked like back then and learn a little history about Fort Ord too.)

For the past 26 years this area has seemingly been in a constant state of change. Old boarded up barracks are juxtaposed with shiny new shopping centers and office buildings. I sometimes wish I could have been here to see what Fort Ord was like in its heyday.

Please hide as found and BYOP.
