Orange was first settled in 174(I), created from lands in the towns of Royalston, Warwick, and Athol. The lands were not fully settled until the latter parts of the century, becoming the District of Orange in 178(A). The area that is now the center of Orange was settled around 178(B), when a bridge was built across the Millers River and was finally incorporated as a town in 1(G)10 named for William, Prince of Orange. Small industry grew within the town with the arrival of the railroad in 18(H)6. By the late nineteenth century the New Home Sewing Machine Company was the largest industry in town, putting out 1.(J) million machines at its peak in 1892. In 1(D)00, it was home to the pioneer Automobile company Grout, considered the first automobile built in a factory in the United States. The town's economy declined during the Great Depression, and has been at a lower ebb since then. The historic district is roughly linear, and included in its roughly 12 acres are (E)7 historically significant buildings, most of which are commercial brick or wood-frame buildings in a variety of styles. Tully Mountain, a prominent, steep-sided Monadnock located in the northeast part of town, provides views of the Millers River valley and the downtown area from an exposed east facing ledge on the summit 1,(F)6(C) ft above sea level.
