This geocache is placed at the location of what was once the Penston Level Crossing on the Macmerry Branch line.
The Macmerry Branch was a double track branch line built by the North British Railway. It ran from a junction west of Inveresk to Macmerry via four stations, Smeaton, Crossgatehall Halt, Ormiston and Winton. Authorised in June 1862 the line was completed and opened in March 1870 to serve local collieries and the Gladsmuir iron works.
The Macmerry to Ormiston branch closed to passengers in July 1925 and for freight in May 1960. This area is now part of a network of countryside paths and is popular with walkers and cyclists.
